‘Helios’ is a new (as of July 2021) cultivar of the Horror hortus project. Much of my personal work involves the exploration of the photographic process itself and of how this process informs and interacts with its subject. This sub-project documents the journey of a sunflower bloom from the opening of its petalled rays to its decay and chemical leaching onto photographic paper.

The primacy of the sun cannot be over-stated. It is, of course, the basis of all life and certainly the beginnings of all photography. Artificial or not, light is the ‘photo’ in photography, while the latter half of this word connotes ‘writing’. Photography, therefore, can be used to relate a narrative. ‘Helios’ is the story of the sun, of a flower and of a life.
